Twenty-one days to unbond, and slashing while you wait
Staked ATOM goes through a twenty-one day unbonding period before it can be transferred, and that is a protocol rule nobody can shorten. Two things make it more consequential than the wait alone. First, you earn no rewards during it. Second, the stake remains subject to slashing for the whole period — if the validator you delegated to double-signs or goes offline badly enough during those three weeks, your unbonding balance can still be penalised. Start the unbonding as soon as you decide to sell, and check the validator is in good standing before you do.
The memo is required, and Cosmos wallets bury it
Exchange and provider deposits on the Cosmos Hub go to shared addresses, and the memo identifies whose deposit it is. Cosmos wallets often present the memo field collapsed or optional, which is how it ends up empty. Copy it from the payout screen with the address, and paste it into the memo field of the send form. A transfer without it is confirmed on-chain and unattributable, and sorting it out is manual.
IBC-wrapped ATOM is not ATOM on the Hub
Cosmos is a network of sovereign chains linked by the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, and ATOM travels between them freely. The catch is that ATOM sitting on Osmosis or another IBC chain is a wrapped representation, held in an escrow on the Hub and issued on the destination — it trades at parity but it is a different token on a different ledger. Send it to a Cosmos Hub address and it will not arrive. Bring it back over IBC first, which takes seconds and costs almost nothing, then send from the Hub.
What ATOM secures, and the argument about it
The Cosmos Hub launched in 2019 and runs on Tendermint consensus with instant finality — a block is settled when it is produced, not probabilistically over time. ATOM stakes that chain. The long-running debate in the ecosystem is what else ATOM should capture, since the Cosmos SDK's real success has been the dozens of independent chains built with it, most of which have their own tokens and owe the Hub nothing. Governance has revisited ATOM's issuance more than once as a result, notably cutting the maximum inflation rate. It is worth understanding if you are reading tokenomics figures of different vintages.
How long does it take to send ATOM to us?
Cosmos settles on Cosmos, where a transfer typically confirms in under 1 minute. The Cosmos Hub finalizes each ~6-second block instantly — no confirmation ladder — so ATOM transfers land in seconds. Exchange deposits credit within minutes and almost always require a memo. We start your payout once the transfer has confirmed on-chain, so this is the part of a sale you are usually waiting on.
What does it cost to send ATOM?
That is a Cosmos network fee, paid to the network rather than to us: Typically under $0.01–$0.05 per transaction in 2025–2026, paid in ATOM. See /fees-and-limits for what Anytime Capital charges.
Does sending ATOM need a memo?
Yes. Exchanges pool ATOM deposits at shared cosmos1… addresses and use the memo to credit your account — the standard Cosmos-ecosystem pattern. Omitting it means a manual support recovery. Personal wallet-to-wallet transfers need no memo. Send ATOM without it and the transfer can be credited to the wrong account or lost, so copy both the address and the memo from the payout screen.
What do ATOM addresses look like?
Standard address: Starts with cosmos1 (bech32). Exchange deposits pair it with a mandatory memo Check the first and last characters against the address on the payout screen before you send — a Cosmos transfer cannot be reversed once it is confirmed.
